Unravelling is a way of discovery. Growing up in a multicultural environment intrigued me to explore the integration of South Eastern traditional ways of dressing and modern Western style using colour, texture and structure.
The practise of wrapping and tying in the Nepalese traditional clothing is partially influenced by the Tibetan culture. I experimented with knit and woven, combining them within a garment which created a contrasting aesthetic between the eastern simplicity in wrapping/draping and the western constructed tailoring.
This project has allowed me unravel, in other words discover my own cultural identity and create looks that are unique. As a knitwear designer, I tried not to appropriate any cultures, instead I took influences/inspirations and developed designs trying out new techniques such as knitting beads onto jumpers.
PRINTED LOOKBOOK
I collaborated with 2 Graphic Design students from Kingston, Aliza and Jina to create my Lookbook. The embossing of the cover of the lookbook was done on a press machine, pattern recreates knitwear stitches in an abstract way. The red tape that was used in my designs are also used to bind the look book together with the Japanese binding technique. My colours are inspired by the vibrancy of Nepalese textile and accessories; mainly focusing on the metallic from the sliver jewellery.
